NCCS Releases the New NCL-CAM Module - Turbomachinery Application Library
|
Newport Beach, CA - Numerical Control Computer Sciences has announced the inclusion of the Turbomachinery Applications Library (TAL) with their NCL version 9.1 Multi-axis machining software. The TAL contains pre-defined methods for creating 4 and 5-axis tool paths to manufacture complex impellers, blisks, and airfoils.
NCL is a powerful Computer-Aided Manufacturing software package which generates simultaneous 2 through 5-axis NC tool paths and provides parametric 3D modeling. All geometric modeling and tool path functions are fully associative. A change to the model results in an immediate change to corresponding tool paths.

NCL is ideally suited for environments where design changes are frequent, such as the aerospace industry. NCL also supports full parametric programming where a family of parts can be machined by simply filling in a form. NCL is used extensively in the aerospace, turbomachinery, power generation, tire mold, and composite industries.
The following special features are included with the TAL:
|
|
Impellers and Blisks
- Analysis: Provides analysis tools which check the distance blade surfaces for the purpose of determining cutter sizes and depths of cut.
- Rough machining: Effectively removes material between blade surfaces, using multiple tools if necessary, and provides for user-controlled depth of cut and stepover.
- Hub machining: Machines the hub surface leaving a user-controlled scallop height while avoiding the adjacent blade surfaces.
- Finish machining: Supports 5-axis flank milling of ruled blades or point milling of non-ruled blades.
- Leading/trailing edge machining: Provides a method for the point milling of leading and trailing edge radii surfaces.
|
|
|
Airfoil blades and vanes
- Rough machining: Provides the ability for 4 or 5-axis machining of the pressure and suction surfaces using a bull-nose end mill, with the cutter tilted forward in the direction of the cut. Provides gouge checking to avoid cutter/surface interference.
- Finish machining: Provides the ability for 4 or 5-axis finish machining, with user controlled scallop height, of the suction, pressure, leading and trailing edge surfaces using a bull-nosed cutter. High-speed spiral motion, where the cutter never leaves the material, is supported, in addition to standard lace and box style motion.
- Root and tip machining: Provides techniques for detail milling operations of the root and tip geometry.

Says David Schultz, Manager of CAD/CAM Applications at NCCS, "The TAL is ideal for manufacturers seeking to automate the NC programming of these types of components. In addition, because NCL is a general-purpose CAD/CAM system, the software can also be used for general machining applications such as hole making and pocketing and profiling operations.
NUMERICAL CONTROL COMPUTER SCIENCES
Numerical Control Computer Sciences (NCCS) has been an international supplier of Computer Aided Manufacturing software and services for over 20 years. A recognized leader in software solutions for multi-axis machining applications, its' flagship product NCL, is used throughout the world. In addition to its NCL products, NCCS offers a two through ten-axis universal postprocessor and driver generator called PostWorks. NCCS products run on SGI, SUN, IBM, and HP UNIX workstations and Windows NT.
